Smilodon is a genus of predatory saber-toothed cat in the subfamily Machairodontinae, most closely related to the clouded leopard. Its remains have been found in the Americas. This cat lived from 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago, from the Gelasian to Meghalayan ages of the Quaternary period. Three species are currently recognized: Smilodon fatalis, Smilodon gracilis, and the type species Smilodon populator.
