Meiolania sp. (L/M)

Meiolania is a genus of medium-to-large primitive turtles in the family Meiolaniidae. It lived between two million years ago and fairly recent history, probably going extinct somewhat more than two thousand years ago; this means it lived from the Gelasian age of the Pliocene epoch until the Meghalayan age of the Holocene. There are three known species. Meiolania platyceps inhabited Lord Howe Island, while the smaller Meiolania mackayi lived on the islands of New Caledonia. The largest species, Meiolania brevicollis, lived on the northern Australian mainland.
