A flare gun is, obviously, a gun that shoots flares. Mainly used as a distress call by shooting the flare into the air to create light and indicate one’s location, they can also be used as weapons by igniting flammable substances. Alan Grant used an Orion 12-gauge flare gun in an attempt to drive away the Spinosaurus when it attacked him and the Kirbys in the river. After swimming to the riverbed to retrieve it, Grant fired a flare at the spinosaur, which bounced off its hide and ignited gasoline which had leaked into the river from the boat, setting the water on fire and making the dinosaur flee.
