The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) is a species of frugivorous flightless bird in the pigeon family Columbidae. It was originally endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, probably evolving during the Holocene (perhaps two million years ago) and becoming extinct due to exploitation and invasive species in 1662.
