Terpenes were types of toxins found in plants which spread the deadly terpene toxins in the soil to impede nearby competitors. Terpenes were just one example of the weapons used by plants to ensure their survival, however, and several other chemicals were used by these plants for defense. These chemicals included alkaloids and pheromones, which were used for other purposes.
