Stuart Alan Kauffman, born September 28, 1939, is a theoretical biologist and researcher of complex systems concerning the origins of life on Earth.
On Crichton’s quote page in the front of The Lost World, he prints three quotes: one by Einstein, one by Kauffman, and one from Ian Malcolm. Kauffman is quoted as saying:
“Deep in the chaotic regime, slight changes in structure almost always cause vast changes in behavior. Complex controllable behavior seems precluded.”
