The hay bales were located in a storage shed on Isla Nublar. They were stacked among other equipment and piles of grass. The shed was used to store food for the herbivores. Accompanied by Tim and Lex Murphy, Dr. Alan Grant entered the shed by squeezing through the bars blocking the entrance. He then broke open one of the hay bales to give himself and the children something soft to sleep on. The hay served as a makeshift nest of sorts, providing cushioning and insulation against the cold night. Later, Lex fed an infant Triceratops, christened Ralph, some of the hay. She offered the mother Triceratops hay, but the larger dinosaur was more interested in protecting her baby.
